Frequently Asked Questions

This page will attempt to answer the most common questions people have concerning this type of learning environment.  Please feel free to e-mail Ms. Angela or call 706-636-3354 if you have any further questions.

What is Montessori?
Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental tenet that a child learns best within a social environment that supports each individual’s unique development.  Dr. Maria Montessori, the creator of what is called “The Montessori Method of Education,” based her scientific observations of young children’s behavior. She was the first woman physician to graduate from the University of Rome. Montessori’s dynamic theories included such revolutionary premises as:
  1. Children are to be respected as different from adults and as individuals who are different from one another.
  2. Children create themselves through purposeful activity.
  3. The most important years for learning are from birth to age six.

Will My Child Be Bored When He/She Begins Public School?
Montessori does not duplicate the program offered by public education.  We strive to offer each child a sound foundation for success in the future by developing qualities of responsibility, love of learning, self expression, consideration for others and good self esteem.

What Will Children Learn?
Each child progresses at his or her own rate - no child is ever prodded to do work for which he is not ready.  The environment is prepared to allow each child exposure to:

  1. Academics- math and number concepts, science, geography, reading skills.
  2. Social skills- involving care of self and the environment, cooperation, respect for self and others, group interaction.
  3. Cultural exposure to art, artist, music/musicians, crafts, sewing, drama and imaginative expression.
  4. Physical education includes creative movement, large and small motor development.
  5. Larger group interactions- music, singing, finger plays, story time, etc.

Who will teach my children?
Originally called a “Directress,” the Montessori teacher functions as designer of the environment, resource person, role model, demonstrator, record-keeper and meticulous observer of each child’s behavior and growth.  The teacher acts as a facilitator of learning.

Why are Montessori children generally more self- confident, outgoing, and self-reliant?
Montessori is based on a profound respect for the child’s personality.  He works from his own free choice and is allowed a large measure of independence.  This forms the basis of self-discipline.  As each child progresses at his own pace and successfully completes, he develops confidence in his abilities.

Why are classes not separated by age?
A child can work with older children in one area, younger in another and still have social interaction with children his or her own age.  It is the only solution to the problem of “skipping” and “holding back” children who do not fit into the traditional academic mold (most children do not really ever fit a mold).  Younger children benefit by learning from the older ones; and older children learn consideration for the others and good feelings of self worth by helping younger ones.
